Psychological adaptation to motherhood
a dynamic process of internal changes and restructuring of a woman’s personality, aimed at successfully accepting a new social role of a mother, mastering the skills associated with her, forming an emotional connection with the child and integrating motherhood into her identity. Factors that affect the success of adaptation are:
1) Support from a partner, family and friends;
2) Physical and mental health of the mother (premorbid background);
3) Temperament and health of the child;
4) Experience of one’s own childhood and the model of the parental family;
5) Availability of resources (financial, time, informational);
6) Cultural context and expectations of society.
Violations of the adaptation process lead to gradually increasing psycho-emotional stress and problems in relations with the child.
