Psychological readiness for parenthood

an integral characteristic of personality, which includes the following components: cognitive-reflexive (knowledge, skills and abilities; ideas about future functional parental roles; forecasting future educational activities), personal (personal qualities of the parent; faith in one’s own strength, abilities, independence; self-acceptance; activity in achieving the goals of raising a child) and emotional-regulatory (empathic abilities; altruism; self-control; psychological stability in the implementation of the parental role). The level of psychological readiness for parenthood is determined by the formation of:
1) knowledge about “parenthood” as a psychological and social phenomenon;
2) the image of their future functional parental roles and the roles of their future child;
3) personal qualities that contribute to future effective parenting;
4) the necessary levels of reflection and self-regulation;
5) a positive emotional background of attitude to the future child;
6) a positive assessment of oneself as a future parent as a self-actualizing, self-asserting and self-developing personality.
