Somatic marker hypothesis

The hypothesis formulated by Antonio Damasio and colleagues suggests that emotional processes guide and predetermine behavior, especially decision-making.
“Somatic markers” are bodily sensations associated with emotions, such as heart palpitations with anxiety or nausea with disgust. In the brain, somatic markers are thought to be processed in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and amygdala.
