A type of aphasia that occurs when the subcortical areas of the brain located below the cortical layer are damaged. Unlike cortical aphasias, subcortical aphasia affects areas responsible for both speech production and perception, which can lead to a combination of motor and sensory speech disorders. Symptoms may include slurred speech and difficulty with both speaking and understanding language.
