Theory of self-perception

a theory that states that when people are unsure of the adequacy and correctness of their attitudes, they seek to deduce and confirm them by observing their behavior in appropriate situations. The theory of self-perception was proposed by D. Bem. It is an alternative to L. Festinger’s theory of congitive dissonance, since it assumes that behavior precedes the formation of an attitude.
