Triangulation (emotional triangle)

A situation when a third participant (most often a child) is included in the relationship between two people as a buffer or intermediary for sending messages, expressing dissatisfaction or seeking support. This happens when direct communication between conflicting parties becomes too tense or painful. The emotional triangle theory was proposed by psychologist Murray Bowen in the theory of family systems.
