“Wood and Glass”
a psychopathological symptom that describes an ambivalent emotional sphere. Wood in this context means emotional dullness, and glass means sensitivity and fragility. The symptom manifests itself in reactions that are difficult to predict, from the point of view of ordinary common sense. The German psychologist Ernst Kretschmer described the phenomenon as the “phenomenon of wood and glass” – the simultaneous coexistence of a special sensitivity and vulnerability to some phenomena occurring around a person, and at the same time his indifference to serious events.
