Developing the ideas of psychoanalysis, the general theory and method of treating nervous and mental diseases, Berne focused on the &#8220;transactions&#8221; that underlie interpersonal relationships. He called some types of transactions that had a hidden purpose &#8220;games.&#8221; Berne considers three ego states: Adult, Parent, and Child (which are not Freudian egos, superegos, and ids). Coming into contact with the environment, a person, according to Berne, is always in one of these states.
