Dans son ouvrage \u00ab Stigma : Notes on Managing a Damaged Identity \u00bb, I. Goffman utilise le concept en relation avec les malades mentaux. Selon Irving Goffman, la stigmatisation au sens social signifie un type de relation entre une qualit\u00e9 sociale honteuse et un st\u00e9r\u00e9otype \u2013 une attitude attendue \u00e0 son \u00e9gard, qui d\u00e9termine l\u2019incapacit\u00e9 de vivre une vie sociale \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re en raison de la privation du droit \u00e0 la reconnaissance publique. La stigmatisation peut conduire \u00e0 la discrimination (voir Discrimination au chapitre 1.6.
