La motivation est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement le d\u00e9sir d\u2019endosser le \u00ab r\u00f4le du patient \u00bb et de recevoir des soins m\u00e9dicaux ou de la sympathie. Les sympt\u00f4mes peuvent \u00eatre verbaux, imit\u00e9s ou automutil\u00e9s. Le trouble peut se manifester \u00e0 la fois en relation avec soi-m\u00eame et en une autre personne (auparavant appel\u00e9 syndrome de M\u00fcnchhausen par procuration). Le diagnostic est difficile et n\u00e9cessite l\u2019exclusion des maladies r\u00e9elles.
