Allport, Gordon Willard (1897–1967)

American psychologist, professor at Harvard University, one of the founders of personality psychology. He developed the theory of personality traits and introduced the concept of functional autonomy of motives, according to which motives, appearing from needs, can eventually become independent needs. Allport was an influential figure at the intersection of personality psychology and social psychology, studied prejudice and discrimination, and collaborated in the creation of humanistic psychology. He taught at Harvard.
