Edward Titchener (1867–1927)

Anglo-American experimental psychologist, student of W. Wundt, one of the creators of the structuralist concept in psychology (see Structuralism in Chapter 5 Famous Scientists, Their Scientific Schools and Organizations in Psychological Science). He founded the first American psychological laboratory and became the de facto “father” of psychology in the United States. Titchener first coined the term “structuralism” to refer to Wundt’s research approach, as opposed to the functionalism of William James. He tried to decompose the psyche into certain constituent elements, of which he numbered up to 30,000, and which he compared with chemical elements. At the same time, it is impossible not to appreciate the most detailed descriptions of mental processes and sensations compiled thanks to such investigations by Titchener. He compiled a list of elementary sensations, which included more than 44 thousand sensory qualities, most of which were visual and auditory.
