Elements of executive control during driving
Components of executive control related to the driving process:
1) Planning and decision-making: the ability to develop navigation strategies, determine safe routes and evaluate different options while driving.
2) Cognitive flexibility: the ability to quickly adjust behavior in the event of unforeseen situations – a sudden stop of a car or a sudden traffic jam.
3) Emotional regulation: Controlling anger, tension, or anxiety caused by road conditions to ensure safe and controlled behavior.
4) Regulation of attention and working memory: focusing on important information (road signs and vehicle trajectories), as well as recalling previous knowledge and experience to make immediate decisions.
5) Self-control: constantly evaluating the effectiveness of behavior on the road and correcting mistakes while driving or interacting with other road users.
