Managing Visual Distractions in Traffic

a fundamental cognitive-attentive skill of behavior on the road. It involves the driver’s ability to reduce the impact of incidental or unnecessary visual stimuli that may distract them from the main road. Such distractions can be billboards, cell phone use, or even vivid natural scenery. Managing these distractions means that the driver consciously prioritizes visual attention and constantly switches it to what is most important for safety (lane, signs, traffic). On a psychological level, this ability requires strong selective attention and constant self-control of the gaze. Managing distractions is also associated with reducing the risk of accidents caused by ineffective “divided attention.” It is a skill that regulates the interaction between the stimuli-rich external world and the internal ability to control the direction of attention.
