Joseph Wolpe (1915–1997)
South African and American psychiatrist and psychotherapist, creator of the method of systematic desensitization, pioneer in the field of behavioral psychotherapy. Systematic desensitization is a method of psychotherapy developed by Wolpe, aimed at treating phobias and anxiety disorders. It is based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition: anxiety or fear can be weakened if at the same time there is a factor that counteracts this anxiety or fear.
