Lorenz, Konrad (1903–1989)
Austrian zoologist and zoopsychologist, one of the founders of ethology, the science of animal behavior. Scientific activity:
1) Discovered the phenomenon of imprinting – the irreversible imprinting in the memory of animals at the early stages of the appearance of objects that caused an instinctive reaction.
2) He proposed a comparative method for studying the social behavior of birds of the corvid family (1931) and social relations in the bird world (1935).
3) In 1938, together with N. Tinbergen, he established the role of innate components in the organization of integral behavior, showing that animal instincts are caused not by reflexes, but by internal drives.
4) He studied many aspects of aggressive and sexual behavior of animals, including human behavior in the comparative ethological analysis of these forms of behavior.
In his scientific views, Lorenz was a consistent evolutionist, a supporter of the theory of natural selection.
