Psychological and Mental Stress in Road Traffic Situations

A condition resulting from the psychological pressures experienced by drivers in complex or changing driving situations that exceeds their ability to adapt quickly without compromising efficiency and safety. This stress is one of the main psychological factors that affect the driver’s behavior on the road, increasing the likelihood of errors, slowing down decision-making, reduced attention and, as a result, the risk of accidents.
Factors that affect stress on the road:
1) Environmental factors: traffic congestion, traffic noise, unstable weather conditions and insufficient lighting.
2) Individual factors: age, level of experience, physical health, cognitive abilities, and emotional control.
3) Social factors: the presence of passengers, pressure from others and the prevailing traffic culture in society.
