Reaction and Decision Making Tests in Road Behavior Psychology

Psychometric assessment tools aimed at measuring the driver’s ability to perceive and respond quickly and accurately to road stimuli, as well as the quality of decisions made under time pressure. These tests include tasks such as simple reaction time tasks, which measure the speed of response to one specific stimulus, and reaction time choices, which require choosing the correct answer from several alternatives. These tests reflect sensory-cognitive processing and the ability to make real-time decisions while driving. These tests aim to test the driver’s ability to quickly recognize emergencies, assess risks and make the right decisions to prevent accidents or respond to unforeseen circumstances on the road. They also measure neuromotor reaction time, movement accuracy, and the speed at which visual and auditory information needed for real driving is processed, especially in difficult road conditions or emergencies such as a sudden stop in front of a driver, pedestrians crossing or other vehicles suddenly changing lanes. The practical application of these tests is to predict the driver’s ability to avoid accidents and respond to emergencies, as well as to identify individuals prone to delayed decision-making or motor errors in stressful situations. They are also used in safe driving training programmes, driver training and performance assessment of heavy or high-speed vehicles. In addition, these tests are important tools in traffic research to understand the relationship between reaction speed, decision-making, and driving efficiency. This contributes to the development of preventive strategies, the improvement of road design and the improvement of overall road safety.
