Roger Walcott Sperry (1913–1994)
American neuropsychologist, professor of psychobiology. He is known for his studies of the functional asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres and experiments with the “split brain”. His ideas:
1) Showed the difference in the work of the cerebral hemispheres:
– the dominant (usually left) hemisphere processes information sequentially and analytically, has a highly developed ability to form speech functions;
– the non-dominant hemisphere processes information intuitively and simultaneously, more effectively recognizes complex relationships, sound and musical images.
2) Studied the consequences of surgical separation of the cerebral hemispheres in cats and patients with severe epilepsy. He discovered the role of the corpus callosum in the interhemispheric transmission of information, as well as the role of the non-dominant hemisphere in language functions and the performance of visual-spatial tasks.
3) Developed the chemoaffinity hypothesis, which explains how neurons connect to target organs using chemical tags.
