Wertheimer, Max (1880–1943)
German psychologist, philosopher, one of the founders of Gestalt psychology together with Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka. In 1921, together with the German psychologists Koffka and Köhler, he founded the journal “Psychologische Forschungen”, which published the works of well-known Gestalt psychologists of that time.
Some of Wertheimer’s ideas are:
1) Integrity of perception. A person perceives the world not as a set of separate elements, but as organized whole structures (gestalts).
2) The role of the organization in perception. Perception actively organizes stimuli from the external environment, creating integral and meaningful structures.
3) The importance of understanding in thinking. Wertheimer emphasized that understanding the essence of the problem is the key to productive thinking.
