Stressor

an external, extreme environmental factor that causes stress. Initially, the term was introduced by G. Selye within the framework of the theory of the general adaptation syndrome to denote a strong adverse effect that negatively affects the body. A stimulus becomes a stressor either by virtue of the meaning ascribed to it by a person (cognitive interpretation) or through lower cerebral sensory mechanisms, through the mechanisms of digestion and metabolism.
