Elton Mayo (1880–1949)

American psychologist and sociologist, researcher of organizational behavior and management in industrial organizations. He was one of the founders of American industrial sociology and the doctrine of “human relations”. Mayo emphasized the importance of informal aspects in the life of the production team. Some ideas of his theory:
1) Labor motivation is determined primarily by social norms, and not by material incentives.
2) The most important determinant of high labor efficiency is job satisfaction, which implies good pay, the possibility of career growth, and the attention of managers to subordinates.
Mayo believed that the establishment of sustainable cooperation (the organization of teamwork) was a priority task of management. A significant contribution to the development of sociology of management and industrial sociology was made by the Hawthorne experiments.
